Ike McSwain was afflicted with scarlet fever as a child, leaving him mute and completely bald. When he around eight years old, outlaws arrived at his family's farm, killing Ike's parents and younger sister. He survived only because he'd managed to hide somewhere the outlaws didn't find as they ransacked the house in search of valuables.
He was sent to the same Catholic Mission School attended by Buck Cross. He was ridiculed and teased by the several of the children there, who feared him touching them would cause them to lose their hair and ability to talk as well.
One day, he witnessed some bigger boys attacking Buck, and without thinking about it, jumped into the fray, on the other boy's side. That day the two boys became lifelong friends and blood brothers.
Buck taught Ike to communicate with his hands by using Indian sign, and when they were old enough, the two left the mission together. They both signed up for the Express and found a new family.
