Noah Dixon is the only son of a freeborn black man and his wife. When his wife died in childbirth, Noah's father hired a woman named Sally to be her housekeeper. Noah's father was determined to liberate as many of his fellow Negroes as he could, by buying them, and then freeing them. His actions rallied the white townspeople against him, and one night they attacked the Dixon farmhouse, setting it on fire.
Sally and Noah fled the blaze through the trapdoor in the farmhouse floor, but his father didn't. He took a stand against the men attacking his home and was hanged for his efforts. Sally raised Noah, teaching his father's beliefs and ethics. Noah took them to heart and continued his father's work when he came of age.
After helping Jimmy Hickok out of a skirmish, Noah took up the other man's offer to join the Pony Express as a rider. Noah did just that and after some initial issues, was welcomed into the Pony Express family.
