William F. Cody with his beloved buffalo rifle, Lucretia Borgia, across his lap. Cody nicknamed it after a famous Italian lady from the powerful Borgia family, who had origins in Spain and became prominent during the Renaissance period in Italy. Known as a beautiful woman, she had a reputation for being deadly (she was alleged to have poisoned several people). The model is a Springfield .50 caliber, trap door 1866. Also pictured are, front and center: Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, Lord Adare (later the 4th Earl of Dunraven); Back: Lt. Francis Michler and Lt. Walter Scribner Schuyler. 1871.
