James Butler Hickok was the youngest son of an abolitionist father. His father was held in high esteem by his colleagues and local society, but his own family feared him. Jimmy recalls more one event in his childhood where he'd witnessed his father brutally beat his mother.
When he was old enough, Jimmy ran away from home. He was taken in by Marcus Enright, a retired judge. Along with another boy, Jimmy was trained to be a gunfighter. It was the Enright who gave Jimmy his ivory-handled Colt. Years later, when he was forced to kill Brad Taggart(who was still in the Judge's employ), he kept his friend's gun which was the match to his own gun.
Unwilling to live by the Judge's rules, Jimmy left Enright's employ, and traveled for a spell. It was during that time he saw the advertisement for riders and signed up to ride for the Pony Express. Expecting only steady employment, Jimmy found friends and an adoptive family.
